01Concept

Malaria is one of the oldest and deadliest diseases. It still infects hundreds of thousands of people in Pakistan every year, especially after the monsoon in Sindh and Balochistan. The story of how its cause was found is the textbook example of the scientific method at work.

Step 1: Observations

  • Patients have fever with shivering and sweating that comes back every two or three days.
  • Malaria was most common in low-lying, marshy and wet areas.
  • People thought it was caused by bad air from marshes. The name comes from Italian mala aria, "bad air".

Step 2: Question

What causes malaria?

Step 3: The cause is found in the blood

In 1880, the French army doctor Charles Laveran, working in Algeria, looked at the blood of malaria patients under a microscope. He saw tiny living organisms inside their red blood cells. This parasite was later named *Plasmodium*.

Hypothesis 1: malaria is caused by Plasmodium. Doctors deduced that if this were true, Plasmodium would be found in the blood of every malaria patient, and it was.

Step 4: How does Plasmodium get into the blood?

Many observations linked malaria with mosquitoes: both were common in wet, marshy places, and people who slept under nets got malaria less often. In 1883, the American doctor A. F. A. King listed these observations and suggested that mosquitoes spread malaria.

Hypothesis 2: Plasmodium is carried from person to person by mosquitoes.

Deduction: If mosquitoes carry Plasmodium, then the parasite should be found inside mosquitoes that have bitten malaria patients.

Step 5: Ronald Ross's experiments

Sir Ronald Ross, a British army doctor working in India, tested this hypothesis.

  1. In 1897, in Secunderabad, he let mosquitoes bite a malaria patient. Days later he cut them open and found Plasmodium growing in the stomach wall of the Anopheles mosquito.
  2. Human volunteers were scarce, so in 1898, in Calcutta, he used sparrows, which get a kind of malaria. Culex mosquitoes were allowed to bite infected sparrows. The parasite grew in the mosquitoes and moved to their salivary glands.
  3. These mosquitoes then bit healthy sparrows, and the healthy sparrows got malaria. Healthy sparrows that were not bitten by infected mosquitoes (the control) stayed healthy.

Conclusion: the hypothesis was accepted. Malaria is caused by Plasmodium and is spread by the bite of a mosquito. Soon after, the Italian scientist Giovanni Battista Grassi and his team showed that human malaria is spread by the female *Anopheles* mosquito.

How malaria passes from person to person. Only the female Anopheles mosquito bites people, because she needs blood to make her eggs.

03Real World Examples

Mosquito nets

Sleeping under a bed net, especially one treated with insecticide, stops the female Anopheles, which bites mostly at night. This one step greatly reduces malaria.

After the 2022 floods

After the 2022 floods in Sindh and Balochistan, huge areas of standing water led to a sharp rise in malaria cases. Health teams handed out nets and medicine, and sprayed breeding sites.

Remove standing water

Emptying water from old tyres, pots, coolers and roof tanks removes the places where mosquitoes lay eggs. The same step also controls the Aedes mosquito that spreads dengue.

Short questions

Q1.Who discovered the malaria parasite, and where?Show answer

Answer

Charles Laveran, a French army doctor, found Plasmodium in the blood of malaria patients in Algeria in 1880.

Q2.Write the hypothesis and the deduction that Ronald Ross tested.Show answer

Answer

  • Hypothesis: Plasmodium is carried from person to person by mosquitoes.
  • Deduction: if mosquitoes carry Plasmodium, then the parasite will be found in mosquitoes that have bitten malaria patients, and those mosquitoes will pass it to healthy individuals.
Q3.Why did Ross use sparrows in his experiment?Show answer

Answer

Human volunteers were not easily available, and sparrows get a form of malaria that is spread by Culex mosquitoes, so they could be used to test the hypothesis safely.

Q4.What was the control in Ross's sparrow experiment?Show answer

Answer

Healthy sparrows that were not bitten by infected mosquitoes. They stayed healthy, which showed that the bites of infected mosquitoes caused the malaria.

Q5.Why is malaria common in Pakistan after the monsoon?Show answer

Answer

Rainwater collects in ponds, ditches and containers, where mosquitoes lay their eggs. More mosquitoes means more bites and more spread of Plasmodium.

Long questions

Q6.Describe how the cause of malaria was found, using the steps of the scientific method.Show answer

Answer

  1. Observations: fever with chills every 2–3 days; malaria common in marshy areas; thought to be caused by bad air.
  2. Question: what causes malaria?
  3. Laveran (1880) found Plasmodium in patients' blood: malaria is caused by Plasmodium.
  4. Hypothesis: Plasmodium is spread by mosquitoes (supported by A. F. A. King's observations, 1883).
  5. Deduction: if so, the parasite will be found in mosquitoes that bit patients, and these mosquitoes will infect healthy individuals.
  6. Experiment (Ross, 1897–1898): found the parasite in the stomach of Anopheles; let Culex mosquitoes bite infected sparrows, then healthy sparrows. Unbitten healthy sparrows were the control.
  7. Results: healthy sparrows bitten by infected mosquitoes got malaria; the control stayed healthy.
  8. Conclusion: malaria is caused by Plasmodium and spread by mosquito bites. Grassi showed that the female Anopheles spreads human malaria.
